A window a click elsewhere does not close: always on top, playing on after closing, and fresh every open.

A panel goes away when you click elsewhere. Sometimes that is exactly wrong: you want the page beside the work rather than over it. Set Opens in to In a window in the shortcut’s editor, or choose Open in a Window from the icon’s right-click menu or the panel’s ⋯ menu, and the same page gets a window of its own.

A page moved between the panel and a window keeps the size it was at, and everything else it carries: its account, its zoom, its appearance, its ad blocking.

Always on top

A window can stay above every other window, including the one you are typing in. That is what a thing you are following along with wants:

• a tutorial video while you do the thing it is teaching;
• a checklist during a call;
• a dashboard you glance at without switching spaces;
• a translation open beside what you are writing.

It is a switch in the editor, Always on top, and a row in the ⋯ menu. It is offered only for a window: a panel is already over everything, and goes away by itself.

Keeps playing when closed

A radio, a podcast or a video is something you started, not something you were looking at. Turn Keep playing when closed on and closing the panel or the window leaves the sound going, with the page kept for as long as it plays.

While it plays, the shortcut’s icon in the menu bar wears a small dot, so you know which icon to press to get back to it, and pressing it opens the page exactly where it got to.

Reload every open

The opposite need: a page that should never be stale. Reload every open starts at the link’s own address every time and fetches it again, rather than restoring the page as you left it. A status board, a queue, a feed, a build log.

Note that it also means there is nothing to come back to: a page that reloads has no scroll position and no half-written form waiting for you.

Sizes

Windows take the same four sizes as panels: Phone 390 × 760, Tablet 820 × 900, Desktop 1200 × 800, or Custom. Drag the window’s edge as you would any window and the new size is remembered on that link.

Windows a page opens by itself

A link inside a page that is marked to open a new window follows Links that open a new window: in the same page, in a new window, or in your browser. A window the page opens by itself to sign you in always gets a real window, whatever that is set to, because a sign-in that opens in the same page cannot come back.

Closing

⌘W or the window’s own close button. Closing a window is not signing out, and not throwing the page away unless the link browses privately.
