Documentation
What GreatBar does and how to make it do it. Start at the beginning if the app is new to you; every page after that stands on its own.
Straight to it
- How do I put a website in the menu bar?
- Can I stay signed in to two accounts on one site?
- How do I keep a page above my work?
- How do I get more things onto one bar?
- How do I open a Slack channel or a Figma file?
- Which keys press the icons?
- A site does not work properly. Why?
- Where is my data kept?
Everything else
Building a bar
What a shortcut is, how several hide behind one icon, and what the bar looks like.
- ShortcutsThe six kinds of shortcut, the editor that shapes one, and what a right click on an icon offers.
- GroupsOne icon that holds several shortcuts, as a menu: how to make one, what goes in it, and how it is ordered.
- IconsEvery symbol macOS can draw, an emoji, up to three letters or a picture from the web, in a colour of your choosing.
- BarsWork and home, or a project at a time: a bar is a menu bar of its own, and switching brings all of its icons.
Opening things
Where a link lands, whose account it uses, and what a page can do once it is open.
- Websites in a panelA page under its own icon, kept as you left it: the panel's bar, its ⋯ menu, its keys, and every setting a link carries.
- WindowsA window a click elsewhere does not close: always on top, playing on after closing, and fresh every open.
- AccountsSessions are browsing profiles with logins of their own, so two shortcuts to one site can be two people. Private browsing keeps nothing.
- Links into appsA link that opens the app rather than a browser tab, filled in from a link you copied, plus every System Settings pane by name.
Assistants
Let an assistant read your bars and propose what goes on them.
- MCP and assistantsGreatBar has an MCP server built in: how to connect Claude, Codex, Cursor or any MCP assistant, every tool it gets, and what to ask for.
Reference
The keys, every setting, and what to do when something is wrong.
- KeyboardPress any icon in the menu bar without a mouse, walk the bars, and every key a page in GreatBar answers to.
- SettingsEvery switch in Settings and what it changes: launch, theme, keys and gestures, pages, updates, and the assistants under Advanced.
- TroubleshootingAn icon that will not open, a key another app has taken, a page that will not load, a file that has moved: what each one means.
